I think exams should be computerized.

November 8, 2008

Exams with essays in them should be computerized. I hate it when I’m timed to write essays. Why do we have to write essays? Nowadays, nobody writes out their homework so our writing speeds are on an all-time low. At least for me, I feel like I’m writing slower than I’ve ever written in elementary school. I can write fast but only if people don’t mind seeing a slur of lines that vaguely represent words. It’s disappointing that I have no other way but to draw such lines on my tests or exams, as long as it’s somewhat legible.

However if exams were computerized–as in computer exams– life would be so much easier! I type much faster than I could ever write! I don’t actually mind doing anything else like writing short answer questions but if I’m going to have to write a whole essay, I’ll need some time to prepare an outline. I don’t think the time they give us is enough especially because we’re such technology-reliant kids. And no, I also don’t think it is our fault we are slow in writing; I thought we were tested on our knowledge and application skills, not our writing speed.

Think of it this way, I hate the feeling when I have so much I want to write but I’m racing against the clock to write it. If you told me to write a few hundred words in a minute, I would have great difficulty in completing that task. If you told me to write a few hundred words, like I am doing now, it is nothing. In any case, I thought they were testing on our knowledge, application, and communication skills–what is going on now? Are they going to add an extra category to mark by? Writing speed? Calligraphy? It’s ridiculous.

Aside from our own convenience, we are doing the environment a huge favour since we’re always throwing away our old computers and devices. Why not use these old computers to help students write essays? All they need to do is hook it up to the network and have students type out the essay on word. Whatever safety configurations could be done by any basic computer programmer you could pull out of the shelf. I could probably do something! Anyways, we’re also saving resources by reusing these computers. Say goodbye to paper, pen, pencils, lead, erasers, white-out, or other easily-used-up items! You save countless trees and other objects by simply writing an exam on the computer.

Editing the essay is also easy to do when you’re typing it up on the computer. Relating back to the resources, nobody needs to use their precious eraser/white-out and then write something over again. Why waste white-out or pen ink when you could backspace?

I believe exams should be fully computerized but I also understand that teachers don’t have the time in this world to complete computerizing everything. I’ll be fine if they only redid the essay compoents of my exams! :P It’s highly unlikely but it’s good to dream. I hope I live the day when they decide to do this.

    In your dreams my dear!

Just imagine writing all your essays in Word, then clicking on tools to look for mistakes (spelling or syntax)… here you go!

Sorry, but as a teacher, I like to know if my students are functionally illiterate! And outlines are imperative so you can sort out your thoughts in an order that makes sense…

Hopefully I won’t see the day everybody will be illiterate because they will have lost one of the most amazing skills on earth: the ability to juggle with words and actually just “write”!!! Imagine a world of texts looking just like the ones that went through some Google translator!… ;-)

    How’s school BTW?

Yes, you’ll be tested on your skills, competencies and knowledge… writing is part of that!

That’s true that people could take advantage of Word’s spell check function so…maybe we can use Windows Notepad instead? There’s no spell check for that! Or maybe it’d be a good idea to pull out those typewriters again. Those things are pretty awesome.

As for my outlines, I still use them…I think it’d be much faster and neater to construct them on the computer. I hate scribbling out the old ideas and writing something else on the edge of the paper… Yes, my thought process can get quite messy and indecisive.

I think these computers should not be networked to the Internet…That way, they can’t use translators at all! Just a thought.

I still don’t understand why people are against using computers for tests and exams either, noolo. I think it’d be wonderful if students didn’t need to worry about writing fast enough.

Imagine a big crash… no more computers… what would you do then? Speeding your handwriting can be done easily… like anything else, it comes w practice…

As for tests/exams using computers… too many errors might occur… and it would be used only for multiple choice type of testing…

And don’t forget: computers are programmed… they don’t have judgment abilities (and it will never do!)… I trust teachers’ judgment when it comes to marking… Take French for instance… they could never come up with a reliable corrector because it cannot make the difference between “LES” article or pronoun (this lousy little word determines how you will write what is coming after)… they tried for years and they’re still trying… it just doesn’t work!

Technology is great… but it has its limitations and it will never replace human brain… my fear is: if the whole world relies on technology, one day, people might be unable to do anything on their own… and technology can break down at any moment! So… work on speeding you handwriting girls!

    Later…

If there was a crash, then I take back the idea of using the old computers to type computer exams. We could use computers with external batteries (like laptops). Speeding my handwriting is going to take a lot of practice, which takes time–which I could use for my homework instead. :S

I believe with today’s technology and computer masterminds, there is little room for errors.

Computers should be used for typing the tests but I’ve never felt that the computers should be marking the tests. All the teachers would be doing is marking the test off the computer screen–good for the environment!

I have never come to the conclusion where computers will replace anyone or any brains. We are still using our brain to type out our work. The usage of technology is inevitable. Why hold back from reaching its potential? I think anything could break down–even our bodies–but that doesn’t stop anyone from doing the best they can do. :D
